How to find models (or a photographer) for a shoot

You don’t need an agency or a budget to find someone to work with. You need to look in the right places and, above all, write a clear request.

Where to look

Instagram: your city’s hashtags (model, photographer, TFP plus the city name) and the accounts tagged in photos you like.
Facebook groups for collaborations in your area. Read the rules before posting.

Schools of photography, makeup and fashion: students look for portfolio projects.
Agencies: many offer test shoots with their new faces.
People you know: for a first portfolio, a friend who is comfortable in front of the camera is enough.

Write a casting call that gets replies

A good casting call fits in a few lines and answers the questions in advance:

The project in one sentence, with two or three reference images.
The date, duration and place (at least the neighbourhood).
Paid or TFP, and what each person gets. See TFP explained.
Who you’re looking for, without needless requirements.
A link to your work: that’s what makes people decide.

Messaging someone directly

Introduce yourself, say what you like about their work, suggest a specific idea and a date. A personal four-line message works better than a long copy-pasted one. No reply after one follow-up? Move on to someone else.

Mistakes that put people off

A vague message (“wanna shoot?”) with no project or date.
No portfolio to show, not even a small one.
Promising “exposure” instead of something clear in return.
Pushing after a no.
Forgetting safety: offering a public place upfront and welcoming a chaperone puts everyone at ease.
