Modeling scams: how to spot them

Updated October 2, 2026

Photography and modeling also attract scammers. Their methods repeat themselves: once you know them, you spot them fast.

Red flags

  • You’re asked to pay to be selected: sign-up fees, a “mandatory” portfolio, training to buy before any contract.
  • The offer is too good: a big fee for very little work, no portfolio needed.
  • Everything is urgent: you must answer or pay today.
  • You’re asked for private or nude photos “for the casting”, by message.
  • You receive a check or transfer that’s too high and are asked to send back the difference.
  • The recruiter refuses a video call, has no website, or writes from an address imitating a real brand.

Check before you reply

  • Search the name of the person and the company with the word “scam”.
  • Contact the brand or agency through the details on its official website, not those in the message.
  • Ask for a written contract and references from people who have worked with them.
  • Never give your banking details, a copy of your ID or private photos to someone you haven’t checked.

If it happens to you

Stop replying, keep the messages and receipts, and report the account on the site or network where it contacted you. If you lost money or are being threatened, contact your local police and your bank.

On Castalio, a reference only exists when there was a real collaboration, and every report is reviewed with a written reason: it’s designed so dishonest accounts get spotted fast.

Frequently asked questions

Can a real agency ask for money?

A serious agency earns a commission on the jobs it gets you, not fees before representing you. Be wary of any payment required to be accepted.

I’m asked for nude photos for a casting. Is that normal?

No. Don’t send them. A legitimate casting for adult content involves a contract, age verification and identifiable people, never just a message.

How do I check a photographer?

Look at their portfolio and how long their accounts have existed, ask for references, have a video call and follow our safety checklist.
