Model Mayhem alternatives: an honest comparison

Model Mayhem is still the best-known site for connecting models and photographers. Yet many members look elsewhere, mostly because of what a free account can’t do. Here is what exists, with numbers checked at the source.
Why people look elsewhere
According to Model Mayhem’s official membership page (checked September 30, 2026):
- Free account (Basic): unlimited messages with friends only, 50 portfolio images, 1 casting call per week, 10 friend requests per day.
- Premium ($6 US a month): 100 out-of-network messages per month, 150 images.
- VIP ($10 US a month): unlimited out-of-network messages, 1,000 images.
In other words, on a free account, writing to someone you don’t know yet starts with a friend request. That is the complaint that comes up most often.
The other options
- PurplePort — very active in the UK. According to its own help article (June 2024), a free account is limited to 4 new messages per day and 15 visible portfolio images, and can’t create or apply to paid casting calls.
- Swipecast — a model booking app: the platform takes a commission on each job. Built for paid work more than for collaborations.
- Model Management, One Model Place — international directories with a limited free account and paid options.
- Facebook groups and Instagram — free, and that’s where a lot of people are. But there are no tools: no references, no verification, no record of what was agreed.
- Castalio — our project, not open yet. That’s its real downside today: it has no members yet. What’s planned is described below.

What Castalio wants to do differently
- A free member can always message another member.
- Every moderation decision comes with a written reason and a right to appeal.
- References tied to real collaborations, with a right of reply.
- A safety check-in that alerts a trusted contact.
- Image releases signed online by both parties.
- An interface in 40+ languages.
How to choose
Go where the people in your city are: an empty site is useless at any price. Nothing stops you from keeping a profile in two places. And whatever the site, keep the same safety habits before a shoot.
